Hands Across the Sand June 25 at Long Beach CA

Did you hear about the rare Gervais whale that washed ashore in Puerto Rico last month?
The necropsy showed that the cause of death was due to 10 POUNDS OF PLASTIC BAGS caught in the whale’s digestive track! Wow – I don’t know just how many bags it would take to make 10 lbs – but I am guessing in the 1000’s! Every day over 8 million pieces of litter, mostly plastic, enter the ocean and the majority of the trash comes from beaches - left by careless individuals. Each year over 100,000 marine mammals and over 1 million sea birds lose their lives due to Plastic Trash.

It is for this reason that Planet Rehab has decided to precede our Hands Across the Sand event with a Beach Clean Up Fundraiser.

Hands Across the Sand is a simple event, where we will link hands at noon on June 25 for 15 minutes to oppose offshore drilling and to stand for the health of the oceans. Last year Hands Across the Sand spread to 187 countries and over 900 individual locations.
Planet Rehab hosted Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach last year, but, due to our work in Long Beach this past year (Leaders Causing Leaders Conference at Long Beach Convention Center) and the wonderful contacts that we have made, we decided to host Long Beach for 2011.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Planet Rehab requests your presence as we celebrate Hands Across the Sand this year beginning with our First Annual Beach Clean Up Fundraiser which will commence at 8:15 AM and be followed at 11:00 AM by our Hands Across the Sand program.
We will be meeting at Granada Launch Ramp in Long Beach located at 5101 E. Ocean Blvd. Long Beach 90803.

Oct 10 in Downtown LA protesting Coal and supporting clean energy

Hello Team!

We just found out about an incredibly important Day of Action that we would like to support scheduled for Oct. 10th. Yes this is short notice, but I think that we can still lend our support as this action coincides with our goals to bring healing to the planet. We will be partnering with Greenpeace, Sierra Club, CicLAvia and numerous other organizations that are working to create change. Please let me know if you can help us organize the event and if you will be attending. Here are the details:

WHO:

YOU - your family, friends, associates - anyone that is concerned about the health of the Planet and wants to move beyond dirty fuels.

WHAT:
Los Angeles is too dependent on dirty fossil fuels. Coal-fired power plants in Arizona and Utah deliver dirty, dangerous, and increasingly expensive power to Los Angeles. Locally, oil refineries poison the Los Angeles air, harming local residents while making climate change worse. These same coal and oil companies take the money we pay for our power and use it to fight public health, safety and environmental standards at City Hall, the State Capitol, and in Washington D.C.
Enough is enough.
There is a solution to our over-dependence on these dirty ways of getting power. Efficiency projects and clean energy can help replace dirty coal. Better public transportation, bike paths, and electric vehicles can help end our addiction to oil. Los Angeles can lead the nation in this clean energy transition, attracting new job-creating industries to our city. We can create jobs by moving towards a cleaner future, but we need YOUR help!
Join Planet Rehab, Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and many more groups from all over LA on October 10th to rally against the coal and oil industries’ grip on Los Angeles. This rally is being held as people stand up in cities all over the world as part of an international day of action against climate change.

WHERE:

South Lawn at City Hall, on First Ave between Main St and N. Spring St. (The street will be closed off for access as part of the CicLaVia closure throughout LA this day)

Downtown Los Angeles, 1st Avenue, between Main Street and N. Spring Street (The street will be closed off for access as part of the CicLaVia street closure happening throughout LA this day. For more info, visit http://ciclavia.wordpress.com/), Los Angeles, CA (map)

WHEN:

October 10 (Sunday) 12:30 PM

For questions or to assist organizing our participation in this event, please call Gary at 323 350 0873 or email gcmitchell7@aol.com.

Also, please let us know if you would like to order a Planet Rehab Tee Shirt to be worn at this event.

Thank you for spreading healing to our planet!
